Simple Homemade Dumplings
There’s something so comforting about homemade dumplings simmering away in a pot of soup or stew. These classic dumplings are soft, fluffy, and incredibly simple to make with pantry staples you probably already have. No rolling, no fancy steps—just mix, drop, and let them cook to pillowy perfection. This is the kind of old-fashioned recipe that turns an everyday meal into pure comfort food.
Simple Homemade Dumplings
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
- ½ cup milk
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.
- Add the butter and cut it into the dry ingredients using a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture looks crumbly.
- Pour in the milk and gently stir until a thick batter forms. It should be soft and scoopable, not runny.
- Let the batter rest for about 3–5 minutes. This helps the dumplings turn out light and fluffy.
- Drop spoonfuls of the batter into a pot of gently boiling soup or stew.
- Cover the pot with a lid and let the dumplings simmer for 15 minutes. Don’t lift the lid while they cook—this is key for fluffy dumplings.
- Once cooked, serve hot and enjoy right away.
